English Teacher & Educational Product Developer

Zhanjiang Middle School, China

2016 - 2020

As an English Teacher in Zhanjiang, China, I designed and delivered engaging lessons for middle school students, focusing on language exposure through listening and speaking practice. My approach emphasised building confidence and fluency in a practical, immersive environment, without relying on traditional homework or written assignments. This allowed students to develop their skills naturally while fostering a genuine interest in the English language.

In addition to teaching, I contributed to the development of Frog Voyage, an innovative educational tool designed for schools to help students learn about other languages and cultures. This project involved creating interactive and engaging content to inspire curiosity and cross-cultural understanding. Through this work, I gained valuable experience in educational product development and honed my ability to craft tools that support global learning initiatives.

My Projects

I am passionate about bringing ideas to life through my own projects, which allow me to explore creativity, problem-solving, and innovation outside of traditional work settings. Whether developing educational tools, experimenting with new technologies, or creating solutions that address real-world challenges, I enjoy the process of turning concepts into impactful products.

These personal projects not only fuel my curiosity but also help me refine my skills and gain new perspectives, which I bring into my professional work.

Creative CV Video
During the peak of the pandemic, when businesses around the world were furloughing employees and opportunities were scarce, I realized that standing out required more than just a traditional application. Determined to showcase my skills and creativity, I took a unique approach by creating a video that highlighted not only my professional experience but also my personality and innovative thinking.

In the video, I crafted a compelling narrative about my journey, showcased key accomplishments, and presented my vision for the future—all while ensuring it was engaging and memorable. This proactive and unconventional strategy allowed me to connect with potential employers on a deeper level and demonstrate my ability to think outside the box, even in challenging times.

To bring the video to life, I took on every aspect of the creative process except the actual filming—though to be fair, I had to be in front of the camera!

I hired a professional film crew to ensure the quality matched the vision, but everything else was in my hands. From scouting the perfect locations to meticulously storyboarding each scene, crafting a compelling script, and directing the production, I orchestrated every detail. This hands-on approach not only showcased my ability to manage and execute complex projects but also reflected my commitment to delivering a high-quality, impactful final product.

For Mandarin Learners

After spending three years in China and immersing myself in the language, I noticed a clear disconnect between spoken Mandarin and the written characters (Hanzi). This inspired me to design and develop MidMando—an app created to bridge the gap for Mandarin learners by helping them seamlessly connect their speaking skills with reading and writing.

While learning Mandarin through speaking and listening helped me develop conversational fluency, it quickly became evident that this method left significant gaps in my ability to read, write, or even type in the language. Spoken Mandarin relies on tones and sounds, while the written system (Hanzi) consists of thousands of unique characters with no direct phonetic link to the spoken words. Even with fluency in speaking, there was often a disconnect when trying to associate the words I already knew with their written counterparts.

This challenge highlighted the need for a tool that could bridge the gap by connecting pinyin—the romanized phonetic system used for Mandarin—with the corresponding Hanzi characters. Such a tool would allow learners to anchor their existing vocabulary and speaking skills to the written language, creating a more holistic understanding and enabling them to fully engage with Mandarin in all its forms. MidMando was designed with this purpose in mind: to help learners seamlessly link the spoken and written aspects of Mandarin, making language acquisition more comprehensive and intuitive.

As an avid tennis player, I wanted a simple and effective way to track scores and games I played with friends. When I couldn’t find an app on the Apple App Store that met my needs, I decided to build my own—Tally Serve.

I envisioned an app that could not only track scores across multiple games but also integrate seamlessly with Apple Watch health data, providing a complete picture of performance and activity. Beyond solving a personal need, this project was an opportunity to challenge myself and expand my skills in Swift development. By applying knowledge gained from my ongoing, part-time Master’s in Computer Science with AI, I was able to design and develop a tool that merges functionality, learning, and my passion for tennis.
